Original Banger's Pillar

The Sala Carvalhal in Palheiro Village now features a model of Banger’s Pillar.

John Light Banger lived in Madeira during the late 18th Century trading in wine and other goods. He built the pillar which was completed in 1798. Its function was to facilitate the transport of cargo from boats anchored in the harbour to shore.

It was later used by Blandys as a signalling tower for ships consigned to their agency. The famous landmark was demolished in 1939 amidst public protests to make way for the new Avenida do Mar.

Some of the stones were brought to the Palheiro Estate and today form the central feature of the Rose Garden in the Palheiro Gardens. The remains of the pillar’s base can still be found on the Avenida do Mar!

Both this model of Banger’s Pillar and the exhibition of paintings by local artist Guareta can be viewed in the Sala Carvalhal in the Forum Building during your visit to Palheiro Village.
