Palheiro Gardens in the Spring

Cantua Buxifolia

After the good winter rains and flower bed preparations, we are ready to greet the spring with the mass of colours it brings us. Wild Freesias with their wonderful scent are growing everywhere, together with Daffodils, Rhododendrons and the mauve Moschosma from Zimbabwe. The beautiful and tender Cantua buxifolia with its red long trumpets and the rare Clematis grandiflora is also in flower.

Among the flowering trees we will see the lovely Michelia Doltsopa from the Himalayas, different kinds of Mimosa and the white and pink Magnolias. The Judas tree flowers a bit later together with the white and blue Wisterias. The roses are all pruned back in January and start flowering again very soon.

We must not forget the Camellias either, as they start flowering already in October and go on until May, if we are lucky. Look out for the Reticulatas with their huge flowers. The different Proteas from South Africa together with their cousin, the Waratah from Australia will be in full bloom. The box hedges will all have been cut and the lawns are emerald green until the short deep pink Oxalis makes an amazing carpet all over them!
